Séminaire de Ayumu Miyakawa, Geological Survey of Japan

" Rheological Variations and Their Impact on Deep Tremors: Insights from Numerical Simulations "

Deep tremor and slow slip events are thought to occur in the transition zones where both brittle and ductile domains coexist. Recent studies suggest that the strength of hydrous oceanic crust may be lower than previously thought. These observations make the study of how variations in the material properties constituting the plate interface affect its structure an important research topic. In this presentation, numerical simulations using a thermomechanical code (I2ELVIS) are used to investigate the influence of rheological variations in materials such as sediments and oceanic crust on the structure of the plate interface.

Three scenarios were studied in which the strength of the oceanic crust was varied. It was observed that the sediment exhibited plastic (brittle-like) deformation to greater depths as the strength of the oceanic crust increased, even when the properties of the sediment remained constant. This finding suggests that the lower limit for the occurrence of deep tremor may be controlled by the materials that make up the plate boundary.
